a)     Cost of pond creation:  depending on the budgeted capital, one could still start small and still make huge profits. By using the plastic ponds before graduating into the concrete or earthen ponds which is more expensive, by so doing reduces cost and adding to profit.

b)     Volume of fish stock:  most people are with the impression that the more fishes you have in the pond the more money you can make. But this is not totally true as one can encounter a diminishing return which can affect profit margin totally. Thus, it’s advisable to stock a moderate amount of fishes bearing in mind quality not quantity as the size of a fish is very crucial in the market because it attracts more buyers which will add more to profit.

c)      Cost of fish feed:  this is the highest cost component as it can constitute up to 60percent of production cost, be sure to have enough capital to meet up to the feeding needs of your fish stock because fish could literally eat your pocket dry. So start small and grow big, ensure that the volume of your fish stock is lesser equivalent to your budgeted capital so you don’t spend all your money on feed alone. Only stock huge volume if you have robust capital and a ready market to sell them off when they are ready to be sold.

Target market:  one of the mistakes fish-farmers make is to start looking for a market when the fishes are market-ready not knowing that the longer the fishes stays in the pond the more the cost of feeding Incurred.

   Thus, it’s advisable to have a target market already before the fishes have grown enough to be sold. The goal of every fish farmer is to be able to make huge profit despite the competitive market, and for this to be achieved especially for a small scale fish-farmer, it is imperative to avoid “middle man”. Most middle men buy in very large quantity which is catchy for most fish-farmers but at the end this small scale farmer still make lesser profits. Reason is that the middle man buys at cheaper prices and sells to the retailers or direct consumer at high prices; so imagine the profit to be made if that middle man wasn’t involve in the business. However, a good way to make more profit from a fish-farm is to have your own target market. Using this strategy you can sell at retail price which is far higher in profit generation than selling to a middle man and still keep all the profit the middle man could have made. The negative side of this strategy is that you get to sell a volume at a time which is rather slow, but its more better  when you start having a consistent customer and before you know it, you will be having your own market which will ultimately lead to your business expansion in the long-run.

       By successfully getting a target-market of your own will increase profit tremendously and reduce cost of running your business drastically. Hotels, eateries, restaurants and household have proved better targets, the price of your fish must be competitive and size of your fishes is a quality to look out for because the above targeted market will remain loyal as long as supply of fishes with attractive size and volume is constant.

Fish processing:  another creative way to make more money from fish-farming is to diversity by improving the value of your fish through processing. Thus, from mainly selling out fresh fishes to drying some (smoking). Smoked fish also have a high demand in the market and its price is higher than the normal fresh tilapia and catfish and can be stored for a very long time. Smoking the catfish or the tilapia fish with the right packaging will create a breakthrough in the market as its preferred to fresh fish when preparing some delicacy.

Proper management: one of the creative ways to bring in more money in fish-farm is through proper management; it is one of the key factors to consider when invested in fish-pond because without proper management set in place, losses will be inevitable. Thus, the following are considered;

a)     Water quality:  water quality is one of the most important factor to be considered when running a fish pond, as it affects the fish in different ways which include; survival, growth and reproduction. Feed isn’t the only component for the growth of a fish; the aquatic environment, water quality and even the climate are also important factors. Different fish species have different water quality aspect, ranging from the temperature, concentration, salinity, ph, oxygen to hardness, e.tc within which they can survive, grow and reproduce.  Within this range of water quality, every fish has its own optimum level which it performs best, reproduce and grow fast. Therefore it’s the duty of the fish-farmer to check all this and make sure the catfish and the tilapia fish is enclosed in the most suitable aqua-environment for them.

b)     Mortality: mortality of fish stocks in catfish and tilapia fish is no exception when fish-farming is mentioned. Despite the goal is to make profit, if the fishes continues to die, the volume continues to reduce then there will be no profit to be made.

Cause of catfish and tilapia fish mortality:

Feed induced mortality: mortality in this sense are caused as a result of over feeding, contaminated floating feed, deficiency in feed ingredient.

Pollution induced mortality: catfish and tilapia fish pond can be polluted by several pollutants such as; feed waste pollution, pollution from flood, toxin pollution. Other causes of mortality in catfish and tilapia fish include:

Digestive stress: this mainly occurs in catfish just recovering from sickness. However, it is advisable to reduce their feed intake and increase them again as they recover by then they would have the energy to digest faster without stress.

Transfer fatigue: this occurs when the fish stock is been transferred from one pond to the other regularly and feeding them immediately. By doing so continuously can lead to mortality. Therefore, it’s advised to allow the fish to relax a little and get use to the water surrounding before feeding them again.

 In the same vein, the matured ones should be removed and put in a separate tank before adding a fingerling or juveniles to avoid the bigger ones eating the newbie.

Thus, in summary proper management requires identifying the possible endangerments to the fish stock and avoiding it or preparedness against it so as to reduce the cost of management effectively and increase profit inputs relatively.

In conclusion, the most effect ways to make more money from fish farm is to have an activity in the pond from the fingering level to harvesting at least monthly for higher income.
